"Help, I get shin splints and pain in my feet when I run, but I don’t want to stop exercising. It keeps me fit and healthy.

Are you dealing with Foot Pain or Plantar Fasciitis and feel like you've tried everything but still can't find relief? Have you been doing everything right - resting, icing, stretching, and doing a bunch of exercises you saw on YouTube – but still have Foot Pain?

If so, please, read on…

It’s common to think that "resting" and "taking it easy" are simple treatment options that magically make your Foot Pain disappear. I'm here to tell you that, most times, this is far from the truth. Foot Pain typically results from misaligned hips or pelvis or other postural problems that have a knock-on effect on the feet, eventually leading to pain and discomfort.

Does This Sound Like You?

Typically the story we hear goes something like this

When I wake up every morning, the first couple of steps are excruciating, but after 5-10 minutes, the pain subsides slightly. I usually can make it through my day, but I can always feel a little discomfort in my foot. If I try to run or jog, the pain increases, thus causing me to stop, which is very frustrating. I went to my podiatrist and was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis. I was given a steroid injection in my foot (which was very uncomfortable). Still, it temporarily relieved me, allowing me to tolerate jogging and walking again. The pain returned after about a month or two but was a little worse this time. My podiatrist told me I could return for another injection in 3 or 4 months if the pain returned. Still, I want lasting solutions and not just a quick fix. I don't want surgery or injections, but I'm starting to feel like that is my only option. I just want to run around the yard with my (grand)kids, jog, or work out without this pain.

If this sounds like you, I want you to know that something can be done to provide lasting results other than pain medication, surgery, or injections.

The Truth About Foot Pain

Our feet do a lot for us. They carry us everywhere we need to go, enable us to engage in physical activity, and support our body weight. Given how much we rely on them, taking good care of them is important.

Unfortunately, once it develops, Foot Pain can seriously affect your mental health. It can cause feelings of depression, anxiety, and frustration. That's why it's important to see a physical therapist if your foot pain impacts your daily life or you have other symptoms, such as swelling, numbness, or tingling.

Overuse and wearing improper footwear can cause various foot problems, including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, and stress fractures, so it's important to wear shoes that fit well and offer adequate support for your feet. High heels, flip-flops, and unsupportive shoes can all inevitably lead to foot pain.

When addressing foot pain, it is important to determine the true cause of the discomfort. By identifying the specific area that hurts, the underlying cause can be swiftly detected and treated with precision. So, if you're experiencing any form of pain, note where it hurts to help guide us in accurately diagnosing and treating your symptoms. But even though the location of the pain is important, most foot pain, plantar fasciitis, and shin splints originate from places other than the foot.

"Weakness in the hips can actually lead to foot and ankle problems."

That’s why when we address foot pain, we look at the foot but looking at the other structures that play a pivotal role in the foot is paramount. Determining your foot type (neutral, flat, or overarched) is also important because it can play a role in foot and ankle discomfort, especially plantar fasciitis.
