It is very common to think that “resting” and “taking it easy” will make your back pain and sciatica somehow magically go away on its own. I’m here to tell you that most times this is far from the truth. Typically, low back pain back pain is the resultant of years and years of improper posture, lifting mechanics, and weakness that eventually leads to pain and discomfort.
Most people fall into the trap of going to their MD or even a “low back specialist” which X-rays and MRIs are performed that typically show “degenerative disc disease” or a “herniated disc”. These findings then lead the MD to conclude that your pain is directly correlated to the findings from the diagnostic imaging. The TRUTH is that after age 50 almost EVERYONE will have degenerative disc disease (or loss of space between vertebrae) and many people walk around with a “herniated disc” and are asymptomatic. To be 100% honest with you more than 70% of “herniated discs” actually resolve themselves.

Your MD prescribes you pain medication and/or injections and tells you to come back in 3 months. You may get temporary relief but many times the pain either returns, doesn’t get any better, or in most cases gets worse. This then leads to the MD prescribing you stronger pain medication or more injections and now you become stuck in a perpetual cycle of getting only temporary relief without ACTUALLY fixing the problem. (Have you ever wondered why you can only have 3 injections in a year period? There is a specific reason for it but that’s a whole different topic that we will save for another day.)
If this sounds like you, I’m here to tell you that you don’t “just have to live with it”, it’s not “just your age”, and you definitely don’t “have to stop exercising”. There is a way to get LONG LASTING results so that you can Achieve and MAINTAIN your active and healthy lifestyle without the fear of low back pain.
I would like to offer you a COMPLETELY FREE, NO OBLIGATION, Complimentary Discovery Session to discuss how ProActive Physical Therapy and Wellness can provide you the LONG LASTING results that you deserve so that you can get back to doing the things you love with the people you love!
Talk To A Therapist On The Phone
At Proactive Physical Therapy, We Help Active Adults Achieve LASTING Solutions to MAINTAIN an Active Lifestyle Without Surgery and Costly Procedures!
It can be very confusing to decide exactly exactly what you should do if you have back pain. You’ve likely heard a lot of options such as…
A family member tells you that it’s normal and “just happens” when you get older
A colleague mentions going to a chiropractor
The “experts” on YouTube recommend doing a certain exercise
A friend suggests going to a new type of exercise class
All while the doctor tells you to guzzle pain pills
At Proactive Physical Therapy, we’ve created a 5 step process to get rid of your pain AND make sure it doesn’t come back again.
- Step 1 -
Laying the Groundwork
Most physical therapy clinics are not attentive, they’re fast paced, and your therapist doesn’t have time to actually touch where you hurt.
This is why our first step is to listen to you story.
After working with countless people with low back pain, we know that no two people are alike. Each person has a different body, a different history, and different types of pain. That is why our first step is to have an open conversation and time for you to tell your story. That way we get a deep understanding of what’s going on not just with your body, but also how it’s impacting your life.
- Step 2 -
We Find Out WHY Your Low Back Pain Started
We understand the unease we all inevitably feel when committing to something new or unfamiliar. We want our clients to be comfortable with their decision to receive Proactive care! During these Discovery Visits, we sit down with you, one-on-one, listen to your story, examine you, answer any questions you have, and we let you know what’s going on and what can be done to alleviate it.
If you are still skeptical and unsure if physical therapy is right for you…that’s fine. That is why we created the Discovery Session.
- Step 3 -
Customized Program To Help You Ease Pain and Restore Your Mobility
People are usually told to stretch or given a sheet of exercises from doctors for their back pain. But the problem is, moving or stretching irritated muscles can only increase the pain! Without proper guidance, doing the WRONG stretches or exercises can make the situation worse. It is critical that BEFORE you start to stretch or exercise it is important to alleviate pain with movement.

- Step 4 -
Retrain Your Brain-Body Connection
Most people think that once the pain is gone, the body is healed. This is simply not true! Most people don’t realize that chronic pain causes your body to develop bad compensation habits.
Examples of these”compensations” might be:
*Using you hands to push on your thighs to stand up after you’ve bent forward to pick something up from the ground.
*Putting more weight to one side of the body because of increased pain when standing too long.
*Using momentum to stand upright from a bed, or out of a chair, because of achiness or pain.
*Leaning forward too much because it relieves back pain.
Why Does This Happen?
*Because the brain interprets certain movements as harmful when you have pain!
*Most back pain exercises you see on YouTube, or learn from traditional physical therapy, only focuses on building strength or increasing mobility, they do nothing to restore the very critical brain-body connections.
*At Proactive Physical Therapy, our exercise program offers much more than a “sheet of strength exercises”, or some mobility stretches
We do this by giving you complete one-on-one focused attention in every single movement that applies to your goals.
This Will Allow You To:
*Restore your confidence in performing ALL movements that you were fearful of doing throughout the day
*Return to exercising with PROPER guidance so you don’t have to worry about hurting yourself again
*Develop ‘Brain-Body Awareness’ so you are able to self-correct any improper movement during exercise
- Step 5 -
Optimize Your Quality Of Life
Our best clients are people who are motivated and committed to becoming active again, even if they sometimes feel stuck in their current situation.
If you are willing to put in some effort and open to learning about your body, and you are ready to get back to the quality of life you deserve, then Proactive PT would be a great fit for you.
You Can Expect:
*A life where you can sit and drive without back pain, or having to pull over every 20 minutes to stretch
*A life where you can bend forward to pick things off the floor, without having to sit down from pain
*Get back to exercising without having to worry about hurting yourself again
*Be able to play with your kids or grand kids, without having to slow down or take pain pills
