If you’ve got lower back pain, stiffness or an ache – it’s very common for you to assume that it’s nothing and that it will eventually go away on its own over an extended period of time. A couple of other common misconceptions are that it’s no big deal because you must have just “slept in an awkward position”, it’s just a “spasm” that “everyone” your age suffers from, or it’s genetic because “bad backs run in your family”.

Typically, low back pain is the resultant of years and years of improper posture, lifting mechanics, and core weakness that eventually leads to pain and discomfort.

Most people fall into the trap of going to their MD or even a “low back specialist” which X-rays and MRIs are performed that typically show “degenerative disc disease” or a “herniated disc”. These findings then lead the MD to conclude that your pain is directly correlated to the findings from the diagnostic imaging. The TRUTH is that after age 50 almost EVERYONE will have degenerative disc disease (or loss of space between vertebrae) and many people walk around with a “herniated disc” and are asymptomatic. To be 100% honest with you more than 70% of “herniated discs” actually resolve themselves.

So What Happens Next?

Your MD prescribes you pain medication and/or injections and tells you to come back in 3 months. You may get temporary relief but many times the pain either returns, doesn’t get any better or in most cases gets worse. This then leads to the MD prescribing you stronger pain medication or more injections and now you become stuck in a perpetual cycle of getting only temporary relief without ACTUALLY solving the TRUE cause of the pain. "Is there anything I can start doing now to get Low Back Pain relief"

1. First off, you need to make a decision about getting help. So many people procrastinate for so long, thinking that Back pain will ‘just go a.way with time’, but then 6 months down the line they’re still putting up with it, and nothing’s changed… Or it gets worse.

2. I can’t emphasize this enough, Do the Correct exercises for the Correct Muscles – one of the best things to help you ease your Back pain is to do the right series of progressed exercises – the right exercises given to you by a Physical Therapist will help reduce pain, and allow you to move freely again quick – and make sure that the problems don’t come back anytime soon (or aggravate your back even more like some exercises do).

3. Avoid sitting and long periods of rest – ever tried to get up from the sofa after resting for a while, but you struggle because your back feels so painful and tight? That’s because one of the worst things you can do that adds to Back pain is rest, and sit for long periods of time. Too much rest, and sitting in awkward positions makes your back stiff and tight. It would really help if you were given appropriate strengthening exercises for better posture, alongside hands-on treatment, to get you active and healthy as quickly as possible.
